The Mezzanine Arts Depot (M.A.D.) is set in Black Dyke MiIlls - a Victorian mill that was being used for the textiles industry right up into the early 80s. We need help transforming this large space into a functioning place for artists, visitors, staff and future volunteers.
When we first took the space we had 2 plug sockets for 10,000 sq ft, no running water and not even a lockable front door - we had to nail the door shut each time we left. We now have a functional kitchen, toilets, over 20 power points and replica mill fire door and well over 100 litres of paint on the walls and floor.
However, the job isn't done yet. We need help with the last bits of painting, moving furniture, getting the lay out of the space right and anything else that will need doing in order to turn an historic industrial mill space into a contemporary arts sanctuary, cafe bar and events space.
Once we have the space up to scratch there will be further opportunities for volunteers to be greeters, event and artist support or use the space as artists and performers themselves. We aim to be hiring paid staff as soon as realistically possible, so the opportunity to become part of a team of individuals setting up every aspect of an exciting and original arts and events business is very much available here.
The idea is to work with building and not an against it. We want to clearly be a creative space but we also want to celebrate the fact that this is a beautiful example of Victorian mill heritage and should be honoured accordingly. We are therefore looking to get balance between inspiration, practicality and sensitivity for the original architecture right as best we can at all times.
Volunteers are not required to possess all the skills listed below. Being capable in simply one area would be still be extremely useful.
Skills we are looking for:
Painting and Decorating - toilets walls need decorating as does the staff room. We have already painted one room entirely gold and another a variety of shades of blue. But there is still plenty more to do.
Joinery - as mentioned in the description we have a lot of raw material particularly wood, to make our own artists worktops, coffee tables, dining tables and secure cupboards for storage.
Interior design - if you have an eye for where to put a table, what colour should go where and what angle a sofa should go at this could be something you'd really enjoy.
Team Work - good communication and willingness to get along with others are vital.
Heavy Lifting - table tops and furniture.
Light Design / Installation - ideally we want something better than the strobe lighting we have right now.
Creative Flair - we want this space to always be inspiring. We in no way want to be a run of the mill space. We what this to be a place of freedom of expression. A place where new ideas and ways of doing things come to the fore.
Problem Solving - effective resourcing and the ability to solve particularly practical challenges is essential at this time.
