Bradford Police Museum seeks a Volunteer Museum Curator

The Bradford Police Museum is an exciting city centre museum which is now seeking a Volunteer Museum Curator. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in the ladder to becoming a Museum Curator.

The museum was established in 2014 and is housed at Bradford City Hall in the former Victorian police station, the old cells and courthouse. It now provides an important and unique heritage visitor attraction in the city, presenting the history of the former Bradford City Police through exhibition, guided tours and as a research hub. Visitor numbers are increasing year on year. The museum also owns and exhibits a 7 vehicle historic police vehicle collection.

The museum is a not for profit company, run by a volunteers Board of Trustees and registered with the Charity Commission. It is actively ‘working towards accreditation’ with the Arts Council. The museum adopts and follows national museum curating standards. An important objective is to make the museum more accessible to harder to reach groups.

The Museum Curator will work alongside the Museum Director to manage and take responsibility for the museum’s heritage collection. Working to Industry standards and championing best practice, they will lead a team of curatorial assistants in cataloguing and displaying the police museum's cultural and historical collections. They will lead the planning and delivery of an interesting and engaging programme of exhibitions, events and community outreach activities through the year.

The museum is currently open from March to November on Fridays (10am – 4pm) and Saturdays (10am – 4pm). There are also occasional special events and evening pre booked Group Tours. The Curatorial team currently meet in the Museum on Wednesdays, with occasional additional remote meetings taking place on other days of the week - Thursdays.

The successful candidate will be expected to bring previous knowledge and / or experience of the heritage sector - or similar - with them to the role. This may be in the form of previous experience gained in a museum or similar setting, working in events, or via a qualification gained in a related discipline.

Skills

Heritage sector experience and / or qualification. Experience of working on and delivering a project to completion. Ability and willingness to plan the work for the curatorial team, and to lead and direct where necessary. Ability and willingness to plan and devise a programme of training for the curatorial team to enhance team skills. 3rd party suppliers may be used to deliver the training. Ability and willingness to work as part of a team. Ability to work to Industry Standards and to support, devise and champion best practice. Ability to work with the Museum Director to plan and deliver the Museum's programme of exhibitions. Ability to plan and organise community outreach programmes. Ability to work with diverse groups as part of outreach programmes. Ability and willingness to work alongside Museum Director to ensure the museum's collections are kept safe and in line with industry standards.
