Activity Tester

What’s FlowState – Find Yours! all about? All humans need play – the kind of exploratory joyful play toddlers get from squishing paint onto paper and bananas into the carpet. No pressure to create anything tangible. No-one else watching. No fear of judgement. Just calm, peace and joy which comes from exploration – that’s the feeling of being in FlowState. Creative workshops and formal art classes are all very well, but for a lot of people they are too restrictive, or associated with discomfort, thanks to an education system that promotes conformity over creativity. So, we have a studio space to share - a safe, pressure-free place, called FlowState – Find Yours!, where it is absolutely OK to try new things and make a mess while doing it! It’s a place for anyone of any age who may be lacking the confidence or inspiration, or lacking the space or resources at home to embark on creative self-discovery. Using lived experience, FlowState facilitators will guide and inspire clients on the journey back into creativity. We offer a wide range of activities from basic mark-making, clay, papier mâché and stream of consciousness writing to hurling paint at blank walls and even bashing the living daylights out of an old drum kit. It’s all about breaking down barriers, undoing conditioning and reconnecting people of all ages and abilities to their FlowState. There’s never any requirement to produce works of art, poems or songs, but when there’s no pressure, that’s exactly when magic really does happen. The intention of the FlowState programme is to help people overcome their reservations or fears about creative pursuits, and to help them discover or rediscover their creativity as a means of improving mood and their feeling of wellbeing. This volunteering opportunity is an extremely important part in the development of the FlowState programme. It involves testing out various prototype activities. The testing takes place in the same safe judgement-free studio space that will be used to deliver the full programme.

  • Written role description
We're looking for people who might believe they are not 'arty' but who can bring along with them a variety of non-artistic skills, mindsets, views and personal challenges, which will enable them to try the activities from the perspective of a variety of service users and then provide feedback on the activities, so we can improve them before the service is launched later this year. You may be called upon to test the same activities more than once, e.g. before and after revisions, so we can check that revisions make a positive difference. You must be all of the following:- • Over 18 (or accompanied by a parent or guardian if under 18). There is no age limit! • Willing to try new things and have fun while doing it. • Willing to give up 2-3 hours of your time freely on Thursday afternoons, or Friday mornings or afternoons (evening or weekend sessions could be arranged too) • Open to testing activities involving experimenting with art materials in an art studio, even if you believe 'you haven’t a creative bone in your body'. • Able to provide activity feedback (via handwritten form or online survey) during and after each testing session • Based in Keighley or willing to travel to Keighley at your own expense To help you imagine yourself as a real client of FlowState while testing the activities it might be helpful if you meet at least two of the following criteria (but you do not have to, and you certainly don't have to disclose any personal info to FlowState):- • You believe you are not in the slightest bit artistically creative • You used to enjoy artistically creative pursuits at an earlier stage of your life, but have since given up • You do not currently participate in art, craft or creative writing activities • You have concerns about not prioritising your own wellbeing • You have a tendency to feel overwhelmed and would like to find a way to self-regulate. • You are experiencing a high level of stress due to life challenges, work or family issues, which is having an impact on your sense of wellbeing. • You have experienced, or are experiencing, depression, anxiety, or physical health issues and this has had, or still has an impact on your feeling of wellbeing. • You are neuro-diverse or think you might be (you do not need to have been formally diagnosed), and/or have a learning disability such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia • You are good at spotting flaws in processes (creativity comes in many guises and this is one of them!) • You like problem-solving, or coming up with alternative solutions (again, this is creativity of a different sort to the arty kind!)
