Role Title:
Vehicle Fleet Mechanic and/or Driver Volunteer
Location:
Bradford Police Museum, City Hall, Bradford BD1 Vehicles are stored at the Keighley Bus Museum.
Purpose of the Role:
The Vehicle Fleet Mechanic and/or Driver is responsible for ensuring that the museum’s historic police vehicle fleet is maintained to the highest mechanical standards and remains safe for use. This includes servicing, repairs, and overseeing the procurement of parts. You will play a key role in preserving the heritage of these vehicles, advising the Fleet Manager on necessary commercial repairs, and ensuring that vehicles are ready for public events and displays. Additionally, you will serve as an advocate for the museum’s work, interacting with visitors and sharing the museum’s history.

Training & Support:
• All volunteers will receive an induction to understand the museum’s operations and the specifics of working with the vehicle fleet. Ongoing support will be provided by the Vehicle Fleet Manager, including training on any specific systems or procedures related to the historic vehicles
About The Bradford Police Museum:
The Bradford Police Museum is an independent museum and registered charity, governed by a board of trustees and run by a team of passionate volunteers. We hold Arts Council England accreditation and were praised by The Times in 2023. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, the museum continues to expand its offer as we prepare for the City of Culture 2025.
Located in the heart of Bradford, the museum offers visitors guided tours of the beautifully preserved Victorian police cells and courtroom, alongside a gallery displaying items from our extensive collection. We are the only police museum in West Yorkshire and one of the few in the country to feature a fleet of historic police vehicles.
Our curatorial team works year-round to preserve and maintain our growing collection, ensuring the history and heritage of policing in Bradford is protected and shared with future generations.
Skills
Key Responsibilities:
• Maintain and service fleet vehicles in accordance with industry standards to ensure the safety and heritage of each vehicle.
• Drive vehicles as required for events, exhibitions, and public engagements, ensuring they are safely operated and presented.
• Assist with the preservation and restoration of vehicles, providing expert knowledge on maintenance and repair needs.
• Support the museum in its public-facing activities, interacting with visitors during events and exhibitions.
• Ensure all repairs and services are documented appropriately, maintaining a log of work carried out and any parts replaced.
Desired Skills & Experience
• Qualified mechanic with experience in vehicle maintenance and repair.
• Full, clean driving license with the ability to drive the appropriate class of vehicle.
• A strong understanding of historic vehicles and their unique maintenance needs.
• Knowledge of road traffic laws and regulations.
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the confidence to interact with visitors during events.
• Attention to detail and a methodical approach to vehicle maintenance.
• Previous experience working with historic or heritage vehicles.
• Familiarity with the maintenance requirements of police or other specialised vehicles.
• Experience working in a public-facing role or interacting with visitors during events.

You will receive ongoing support from the Museum Director, Volunteering Coordinator. We also encourage peer-to-peer support between museum volunteers. - Training provided
You will receive ongoing training from the Museum Director, Volunteering Coordinator, and with existing volunteers. On occasion, the museum also provides external training relating the curatorial team duties. - Volunteer induction
You will receive a full induction throughout your three month trial period. - Volunteer Policy

Availability Details
Time Commitment: Flexible based on the maintenance schedule, with regular tasks and occasional event-driven commitments. Specific hours will be agreed with the Vehicle Fleet Manager.
